Age 84 of Coal City, passed away Friday afternoon June 21, 2013 at Morris Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Morris.

Born July 13, 1928 in Coal City, Sylvia was a daughter of the late James and Erma Pisha-Cerny. She was raised in Coal City and graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1946. Sylvia worked at the Morris Paper Mill from 1946 to 1948, and on October 16, 1948, she married Robert Newberry in the Coal City Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Coal City United Methodist Church, where she was membership secretary for over 20 years and belonged to the Evening Star Circle. She also held membership with the Home Extension and assisted with meals on wheels locally. Sylvia was a homemaker most of her life, and loved shopping. She also greatly enjoyed traveling, and cherished her trips with her son Gregg.

Sylvia's family extends their heartfelt thanks to Joliet Area Community Hospice and Morris Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

"We will never forget the happiness and joy Sylvia brought to our lives. We cry because it's over and smile because it happened!"

Survivors include her husband of 64 years Robert Newberry and two sons: Gary Newberry of Bethesda, Maryland and Gregg Newberry of Oak Park, Illinois, as well as numerous cousins.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; son David in 1959, daughter Kay in 1960 and her brother and sister-in-law Glenn and Evelyn Dearth.

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Monday June 24, 2013 between the hours of 4:00PM and 8:00PM at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block north of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Sylvia will then lie in state at the Coal City United Methodist Church, 6805 East McArdle Road in Coal City, on Tuesday morning June 25th from 10:00AM until time of funeral service 11:00AM. Reverend Dr. Thomas Logsdon will officiate and burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Sylvia's memory to Joliet Area Community Hospice, 250 Waterstone Circle, Joliet, Illinois 60431 or to a charity of the donor's choosing.
