Sylvester M. Surman
"Pete"
Age 77 of Joliet, passed away Sunday evening February 24, 2008 at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.
Born April 14, 1930 in Chester, Illinois, Pete was a son of the late Mark and Mary Martin-Surman. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Germany during the Korean Conflict from May 14, 1951 until being honorably discharged on April 23, 1953. After Pete's service to our country he married Katherine McKinney in October of 1953 and she preceded him in death on October 18, 1996. Pete worked as a pipefitter / welder and retired from the Pipefitters Local Union #597. He was a member of Saint Jude Catholic Church in Joliet and his hobbies included hunting and fishing. Pete was also a devoted father and grandfather.
Survivors include three children: Kaye (Bernie) Warriner of Mazon, Richard "Rick" (Robin) Surman of Diamond and Kim (Bill) Shores of Goose Lake. Eight grandchildren: Everett (Shantel) Leasure of Goose Lake, Eric (Tina) Leasure of Gardner, Kelli (Dan) Campbell of Maryland, Brandon Male of Goose Lake, Trent (Angel) Male of New York, Kierney Surman of Diamond and Kyle Shores and Ryne Shores, both of Goose Lake. Seven Great Grandchildren and two brothers: Gerald Surman and Kenneth Surman, both of Wilmington, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, wife Katherine and two brothers: Ronald Surman and Leonard "Bud" Surman.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday February 27, 2008 between the hours of 4:00PM and 7:00PM at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block North of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Funeral services will follow on Thursday February 28th at 10:00AM in Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Mike Pennock officiating.
Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Braidwood with Pete's Grandsons: Everett Leasure, Eric Leasure, Brandon Male, Trent Male, Kyle Shores and Ryne Shores acting as pallbearers and Pete's granddaughters: Kelli Campbell and Kierney Surman as honorary pallbearers.
Preferred memorials in may be made as gifts in Pete's memory to a charity of the donors choice.
