Sophie Cantu

Sophie Kauzlaric Cantu of Coal City, passed away at the home of her daughter in San Francisco on Friday, May 1, 2009 just one week short of her 98th birthday.

She was born May 8, 1911 in Vrata, Yugoslavia, the daughter of the late Antonia and Vince Kauzlaric. Mrs. Cantu's lifelong passion for gardening was surpassed only by her love for her family. During her many visits to San Francisco, and particularly during her final months, Mrs. Cantu was surrounded by wonderful friends she had made there. She endeared herself to her caretakers with her graciousness and unfailing sense of humor.

Survivors include her daughter Dorla of San Francisco and son Darryl of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; five grandchildren: Dr. Ballan Tuck of Capitola, CA, Danielle Cantu of Wheaton, IL, Laurel Cantu of San Antonio, TX and Darin and Jennifer Cantu both of Jacksonville, FL; two great grandchildren Sarah and Daniel Cantu of Jacksonville; a brother Bill Kauzlaric of Monterey, CA,; a sister Mary Hundley of Bloomington, IL and numerous other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son Donald Cantu.

Visitation will be held on Friday May 15, 2009 between the hours of 4:00PM and 7:00PM at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block North of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City.

Funeral services will follow on Saturday May 16th at the committal chapel in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Wilmington at 11:00AM.

Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Wilmington.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Mrs. Cantu's honor to: UCSF Home Health Care, Older Adults Care Management, Pathways Hospice in San Francisco, or to We Care of Grundy County.
