"Russ" / "R.J."

Age 66 of Morris and formerly Palos Heights, passed away Thursday August 25, 2011 at his home.

Born April 22, 1945 in Chicago, Russell was a son of the late Russell Weston Smith, Sr. and Marcella Nadine Grove-Smith. He was raised and educated in Chicago, and graduated from Lindbloom High School with the Class of 1963. Russell was a veteran of the United States Army Reserves and was honorably discharged on August 31, 1971. He was married to Constance "Connie" nee Hameetman, and she preceded him in death. Russell owned and operated Big Dog Construction in Morris and was a member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman Local #56 of Chicago, as well as the Goose Lake Association. Russell cherished his Great Dane's and was affiliated with the Grundy County Animal Welfare League, where he participated in a Great Dane Rescue.

Survivors include his sister Diane (Phil) Evans of Highland, Indiana; one brother-in-law Ron (Karla) Hameetman of Fox River Grove and one sister-in-law Jan Smith of New Lenox, as well as seven nieces and nephews.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; wife Connie and one brother Gary.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Russell's memory to the Grundy County Humane Society "Dane 911" or the American Cancer Society.
