Roland L. Harvey

Age 87 of Coal City, passed away Tuesday April 14, 2009 at his home.

Born March 20, 1922 in Greenwich, Ohio, Roland was raised and educated in Elyria, Ohio by Leonard and Ella Ewing-Fowl. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations as a Pharmacist Mate/Medical Corpsman. On July 13, 1946 Roland married Victoria J. Luczak in Chicago and together they raised their family and resided in Chicago prior to moving to Coal City 1990. After Roland's tour of duty in the US Navy he owned and operated a shoe repair shop in Chicago from the late 1940's through the early 1950's. It was then in the mid 1950's that Roland joined the Chicago Police Department, from where he retired as a Police Officer in 1978. Roland was a member of the American Legion, The F.O.P. (Fraternal Order of Police) and the C.P.A. (Chicago Police Association). Roland was a lifelong fisherman and story teller. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, and after retirement became a woodworker, having been known for making toy cars, trains, doll furniture and bowls. Roland loved people in general and was quite a people-person.

Survivors include his two daughters: Linda Knight of Mokena and Nancy (Barney) Stewart of Coal City; four grandchildren: Elizabeth (Stephen) Scofield of Bristol, England, Dr. James Roland (Kathleen) Knight of Columbus, Ohio, Debbie Stewart of Oak Park, Illinois and Steven Knight of Mokena; two great grandsons: Andrew and Christopher Roland Fischer; one sister Joan (the late Gilbert) Thompson of Lodi, Ohio; two sisters-in-law: Celia (the late Norbert) Provax of San Jose, California and Sylvia Luczak of Peru, Illinois and special family friend Joy Kozlowski of Carol Stream, Illinois, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Roland was preceded in death by his wife Victoria on February 23, 2008; brother Kenneth Harvey and two sisters-in-law: Lucille (Eugene) Koeppe and Irene (Edward) Zalesny.

A private family burial with graveside services and full military honors will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood with Chaplain Sandra Hafey officiating.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Roland's memory to the Joliet Area Community Hospice, 250 Water Stone Circle, Joliet, Illinois 60431.
