Robert W. Smith, Sr.
Age 72 of Coal City passed away Thursday evening, January 26, 2017 at Regency Care of Morris.
Born May 18, 1944 in Fairfield, Illinois, Robert William was a son of Richard and Belle Smith. He was raised and educated in Fairfield, and went on to honorably serve in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, Robert pursued a career as a truck driver. He retired from Durkee Foods, and then drove a school bus with Illinois Central Bus Company in Coal City. Robert was a member of the Gardner American Legion, Morris Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #967 in Morris, Teamsters Local #179 of Joliet, and the Grundy County Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed bowling and spending his time outdoors fishing, camping and golfing.
Survivors include his two children: Tracey Garcia and Robert W. (Maria) Smith, Jr., both of Ohio; step-children: Sue Anderson and Deborah Pennuto, both of Reynolds, Illinois and Richard Pennuto of Gardner; fourteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; his brother and sister: Mary Spicer and Carl (Joanne) Smith, both of Tennessee; his uncle: Melvin Young of North Dakota, who was like a brother; former wife: Grace A. Smith of Diamond; and his special friend and loving companion: Carolyn Lopez of Coal City, as well as her family.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and stepson: Lawrence Pennuto.
Visitation and video tribute will be held on Sunday January 29, 2017, between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block north of Illinois Route 113), in Coal City. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation, and inurnment with full military honors will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood at a later date.
Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Robert’s memory to the family for their distribution.
