Richard A. Severson, 87, of Morris, passed away December 25, 2023 at Morris Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Born September 17, 1936 in Morris, he was the son of Severt and Viola (Nelson) Severson. He graduated from Minooka High School Class of 1954. He was an avid athlete and excelled in the sports of basketball and baseball during his high school years. He grew up in Minooka, where he farmed with his family all of his life until he retired and moved to Morris. In addition to farming, he was the president of Severson Bros Trucking, hauling grain and livestock, until he sold the company in 2001. He also ran a corn sheller for all of the local farmers. After high school, he enlisted in the US Army and considered it to be some of the best years of his life. He was in the Army 8th infantry division while he was stationed in Germany. He was very active with the Moose, VFW, and a Board Member of the Midwest Truckers Association. He hauled cattle for the 4H group to the local fairs. He was also involved with the FFA on their farm plots. He and his loving wife Patricia were married on August 29th, 1975. They spend 48 wonderful years together. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a loyal White Sox and Bears fan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia of Morris; his children Greg (Dorothy) Severson; Steve (Janet) Severson; Teresa (Steve) Bateman; Kris (Randy) Werden; Annette (Matt) Kinsella. His grandchildren Kim (Kelly) VanHyning; Kyle (Clyde) Severson; Tyler (Emilee); Alex, and Mitchell (Grace) Severson; Michael (Tricia) Werden; Hannah Werden; Madison, Chloe, and Grace Kinsella; Brandon, Christina, and Stephanie Bateman. His great grandchildren Ashlyn and Brooklyn VanHyning; Jameson, Jack, and Knox Severson; and Claire Werden.
He is also survived by siblings Ronald (Lois) Severson and Lois Chally; sisters in law Jeanette Erickson and Marcia (Ron) Carnal; and brother in law Alvin Helland.
He was preceded in death by parents Severt and Viola Severson; stepmother Celeste Severson; parents in law Bob and Margaret Wright; sister Bette Bowen; brother Jack (the late Marilyn) Severson; stepbrother Alden Erickson; stepsisters Norma (the late Bill) Berg; Lois Helland; and great grandson Breckin the Brave VanHyning.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024, at 11:45 am at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 West Jefferson Street in Morris with Reverend Kyle Severson officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at 9 am until time of service at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood at 2pm.
