Mitch Sivertson

Age 82 of Wilmington, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born September 4, 1935 in Chicago, Mitchell John was a son of George and Anna (Chamnik) Sivertson. He was raised and educated in Chicago and graduated from Bowen High School with the Class of 1953. At the age of 19, Mitch in an effort to find his fortune in Alaska, traveled north where he landed in Alberta, Canada. It was here that he worked for a lumber camp before he returned back to Chicago to begin his career as a pipefitter. Mitch entered the Pipefitters Local 597 in 1956, and dedicated himself to Local 597 until his retirement in 2000.

Mitch was an active and devoted member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington, where he was past President of Parish Council; served as past President of the St. Rose School Board, and was an usher. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Fr. George Kuzma Council #11149, volunteered with the Joliet Diocese Peace and Social Justice Ministry, and was honored in 2009 as the Joliet Diocese “Volunteer of the Year”. Mitch selflessly worked with the Missions in Bolivia, the Navajo Nation, and dispatched to disaster sites in the states.

In addition to mission work, Mitch took great pleasure in traveling, skiing, and golfing. He enjoyed wintering 3 months out of the year in Sun City West, Arizona, and will most be remembered as a great family man, who cherished his family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years Irene (nee Seklins); six children: Julie Sivertson of Oak Lawn, Janet (Jim) Fisch of Tinley Park, Mitchell (Kim) Sivertson of Scottsdale, Arizona, Terri Adams of Dwight, and Sean (Andrea) Sivertson and James Sivertson, both of Wilmington; grandchildren: Vittoria (Adam) Wurl, Anthony Villanova, Richard Boys, Amanda (Josh) Jardine, Ellen Sivertson, Tyler Sivertson, Nick Grasch, Daniel Fisch and Brian (April) Fisch; one brother, George (Beverly) Sivertson of Tawas City, Michigan; one sister Mary Clarkson of Dripping Springs, Texas; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Patricia Sivertson of Dyer, Indiana, Daina (Ralph) Barthel of Freeland, Michigan and Peter (Roseanne) Seklins of Battle Creek, Michigan, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as his dear friend and mentor, Sr. Ann Ellen Quirk, BVM.

Mitch was preceded in death by his parents and one brother David Sivertson (2015).

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road in Wilmington. Funeral services will follow Saturday morning, January 13, 2018 processing from the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. to St. Rose Catholic Church, 604 South Kankakee Street in Wilmington, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Sebastian Gargol officiating.

Pallbearers will be: Anthony Villanova, Richard Boys, Rudy Aguirre, Mark Tillotson, James Fisch and Adam Wurl.

Cremation rites will be accorded following the services and a private family inurnment will be in Hessville, Indiana.

Preferred memorials in lieu of flowers may be made as gifts in Mitch’s memory to Kuzma Care Cottage, 635 S. Main Street, Wilmington, Illinois 60481
