At the age of 79, Michael Joseph Walker, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, peacefully passed away on May 11, 2023, with his loving wife and daughter by his side, following a four-year battle with cancer and dementia.
Michael is survived by his wife, Dora (Householder) Walker, who stood by his side throughout their incredible journey together. He leaves behind his daughter and son-in-law, Cassandra and Alan Ferrari, who cherished him dearly. Michael's presence will forever be missed by his two grandchildren, Alec Ferrari and Shaelee Ferrari, who brought immense joy to his life.
He is also survived by his brother, David Walker, and his sister-in-law, Dina Walker, and nephews, Drew (Haley) Walker and Matthew Walker, who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Frederick and Ann (Snider) Walker.
Michael graduated from Immaculate Conception School and St. Bede Academy where he built life-long friendships.
Drafted to Vietnam in 1966, Michael displayed unwavering courage and dedication as a front-line medic for the 1st Air Cavalry Division, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry, A Company. As a medic, he provided critical care and saved numerous lives, exemplifying his commitment to serving others. His service and sacrifice were acknowledged with great honor, as he was awarded the Purple Heart, four Bronze Stars for Valor (three with Oak Leaf Clusters), and the Air Medal. These accolades reflect his immense bravery and selflessness in the face of danger, and they stand as a testament to his extraordinary character.
Following his military service, Michael dedicated himself to a career as a diesel mechanic. He spent the majority of his years at Wayne's Garage in Morris, where his expertise and passion for his work were evident to all who knew him. Michael's attention to detail was second to none, and he took great pride in his profession.
Outside of work, Michael found joy in various hobbies and interests. He had a passion for late model stock car racing and used his mechanic skills in building engines for the Schuler families. In his later years, he found solace in long scenic drives, allowing him to appreciate the beauty of the world around him. Additionally, he was an avid collector of WWII model airplanes, a testament to his fascination with history and his appreciation for the bravery of those who served.
Michael Joseph Walker will be remembered as a remarkable individual who’s character of bravery and toughness continued to the end in his battle with cancer and dementia. He leaves behind a legacy of love, sacrifice, and perseverance that will live on through his family.
A visitation and funeral service to honor and celebrate Michael's life will be held on Friday, May 19th at Fruland Funeral Home in Morris, Illinois. Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by him are invited to attend and pay their respects. Visitation will be 9:30am-11am with a funeral service at 11am. Burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Morris.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Wounded Warriors (support.woundedwarriorproject.org) in memory of Michael Joseph Walker, as a tribute to his life.
