Melvin Stewart
Age 88 of Coal City, passed away Tuesday morning October 27, 2009 at his home. Born September 8, 1921 in Joliet, he was a son of James and Mary Stewart. He was raised and educated in Coal City, and graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1939. On February 28, 1942, Melvin married Shirley M. Brandt in New Hope Presbyterian Church. Melvin served his country in the US Navy during World War II and was a member of the New Hope Presbyterian Church, and the VFW. Melvin worked as a clerical person for APSA until his retirement in 1970.
Survivors include his three children: Terry (JoAnn) Stewart, Melanie (Kevin) Fitzgerald and Myra (Paul) Davy all of Coal City; seven grandchildren: Jason (Carrie) Stewart, Brad (Tiffany) Stewart, Carrie (Dave) Cullick, Allison (Travis Tourigney) Fitzgerald, Bryant Fitzgerald, Brent ( (Kristina) Davy and Kristi (Adam) Roberts; eleven great-grandchildren: Brendan Cullick, Abbie Cullick, Ella Davy, Jordynn Stewart, Austin Davy, Aiva Tourigney, Drake and Mackenna Stewart, Joshua and Clayton Stewart and Cooper Roberts; one sister-in-law: Jessica Brandt of Gardner as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; spouse: Shirley M. Stewart April 27, 2006; five brothers and one sister.
Private family service will be held per Melvin's wishes with Reeves Funeral Home in Coal City.
Interment will be in the Braceville-Gardner Cemetery.
Preferred memorials in lieu of flowers may be made as gifts in Melvin's memory to the Coal City Fireman's Association.
