Melvin Robert Mill, of The Woodlands, Texas, formerly of New Port Richey, Florida and Coal City, Illinois passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2015.
Visitation and video tribute will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2015 between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 N. Broadway, Coal City, Illinois. Funeral services will follow Monday March 9, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 S. Kankakee St. in Coal City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Robert Noesen officiating and burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery.
Melvin was born June 12, 1925 in Coal City, the son of Sealy Mill and Anna (Knudtson) Mill. He married Eileen M. Born on June 16, 1946 at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City. She survives. Also surviving are three children, Teresa Meaux (husband Ken) of The Woodlands, Texas; Robert "Bob" Mill (wife Debbie) of Maryville, Illinois; and Susan Cooper (husband Mark) of Loxahatchee, Florida; six grandchildren, Brian (Corrine) Mill, Huntington Beach, California; Jason Cooper, Loxahatchee, Florida; Eric (Lisa) Mill, St. Charles Missouri; Jenna (Zane) Moffett of Wellington, Florida; Jarred Mill of St. Louis, Missouri; and Samantha Cooper of Woodstock, Georgia; three great-grandchildren, Macy and Emily Mill, and Kinley Moffett.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law Mable and Albert Treasure; brother and sister-in-law Maynard and Lorene Mill; mother-in-law and father-in-law Theresa and Chris Born; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Vivian and Bill Finn; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Thelma and Larry Wickman; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Norma and Melvin Jackman; brother-in-law Mervin Joneson; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Mill graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1943. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and was stationed with the Marine Pacific Command in Hawaii. After WWII and his discharge in 1946, Melvin worked for the Veteran's Administration Hospital at Dwight, Illinois, then in 1958 transferred to the Veteran's Hospital at Marion, Indiana. In 1961 Melvin began employment with the Internal Revenue Service in Springfield, Illinois, serving as Public Affairs Officer. In 1973 he was promoted to the Atlanta Georgia regional office of the IRS. He retired from Federal Government service in 1980 and moved to New Port Richey, Florida where he resided with wife Eileen until 2010. In 2010, he and Eileen relocated to The Woodlands, Texas.
Melvin was devoted to his wife Eileen for 68 years. He was proud to be a charter member of the Coal City Emergency Squad and was always willing to get involved in volunteer work. He was past president of the Gulf Harbor Woodlands Home Owner Association (FL), past president of the Springfield Youth Hockey Assoc., and managed weekly bingo for Our Lady Queen of Peace parish in New Port Richey, FL for many years. He enjoyed taking cruises, visiting with his family, working on genealogy, discussing current events, and being a friend to many. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus (5869), VFW, The Woodlands (FL) Men's Club and Fraternal Order of Eagles organizations. Melvin was always cheerful and sociable to friends and strangers alike.
Memorials may be given to Heart of the Nation, offering televised/online Catholic Masses for the homebound (1126 South 70th Street, Suite N601, Milwaukee, WI 53214), or to a charity of the donor's choice.
