Kathleen E. VanDuyne

Age 69 of Coal City, passed away Tuesday evening October 13, 2015 at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Born June 15, 1946 in Joliet, Kathleen Ellen was a daughter of the late Fred and Nelle J. (Spiers) Kociss. She was raised in Coal City; graduated from St. Francis Academy with the class of 1964; went on to earn her Bachelor's degree from St. Francis College, and later her Master's degree from St. Xavier University. On August 23, 1969. Kathy married Francis Jay VanDuyne, Jr. in Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, and together they raised their family in Coal City. Mrs. VanDuyne taught in the Coal City Community School District #1 for 22 years, predominantly first grade, and continued to volunteer with the school district following her retirement. She was an active member of Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and participated in the bell choir. Kathy was also a member of Illinois Retired Teachers and the Coal City Junior Women's Club, where she served as past president.

Kathy enjoyed traveling and taking trips with the Mazon State Bank. She also took pleasure in gardening, her flowers and reading. Kathy was an accomplished pianist and cook,             and will be most remembered as the heart of her family. She cherished her grandchildren and was a devoted grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years Jay; daughter Bridgette (Phil) Hertz of Mequon, Wisconsin; two sons: Eric VanDuyne (Kim Mesecher-Peters) of Gurnee and Craig (Meagan) VanDuyne of Diamond; six grandchildren: Allison and Marissa Hertz and Gavin, Gabrielle, Dane and Darcy VanDuyne; her mother-in-law Kathryn VanDuyne of Coal City; brothers and sisters-in-law: Neil Trotter of Coal City, Diane (Bill) Waite of Oakland, California, Kathleen (Kevin) Manske of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Philip (Kathleen) VanDuyne of Roselle; numerous nieces and nephews including Dr. Benjamin Trotter and Nicholas Trotter, and one cousin Nancy (Chet) Skowronski of Braidwood.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents; brother John Francis in childhood, one sister Honor Trotter and her father-in-law: Francis J. VanDuyne.

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Friday, October 16, 2015 between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block north of Illinois 113) in Coal City. Funeral services will follow Saturday morning, October 17th at 10:30 a.m. in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 South Kankakee Street in Coal City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Robert Noesen officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services and a memorial luncheon will be held in the Berst Center immediately following the Mass. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Braidwood.

Pallbearers will be: Eric VanDuyne, Craig VanDuyne, Phil Hertz, Ben Trotter, Nick Trotter and Mark Skowronski. Gavin VanDuyne will be an honorary pallbearer.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Kathy's memory to the Assumption Building Campaign, 195 South Kankakee Street, Coal City, Illinois 60416 or to Unit #1 Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 177, Coal City, Illinois 60416.
