Age 89 of Gardner, and formerly Coal City, passed away Wednesday February 17, 2010 at Morris Hospital.

Born September 9, 1920 in Kenmare North Dakota, Joseph was as son of the late Frank and Marie Hoffman-Schumacher. He was raised and educated in the Kenmare, North Dakota area, and worked for the Chicago Transit Authority until his retirement. Joseph was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Coal City.

Survivors include two children: Bernadette (Sam) De of Roswell, Georgia and Joseph (Jennifer) Schumacher of Gardner; seven grandchildren: Anitra, Warren, Ralph, Dean, Samantha, Anthony and Joshua; four great grandchildren; four brothers: Frank, Lawrence, James, Luke; two sisters: Margaret and Hilda and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elizabeth, Daughter Kathleen Brainard and two sisters: Mary and Dorothy.

Visitation will be held on Sunday February 21, 2010 from 3:00PM until time of service 6:00PM at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block North of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Reverend Robert Noesen from Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church will officiate and a private family interment will follow Monday February 22nd in Saint Casimir Cemetery in Chicago.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Joseph's memory to his family for distribution to local charities of their choosing.
