Thomas Hugh Talley
("Hug" with an "H")
Age 80 of Morristown, Tennessee, passed away May 16, 2016.
Born September 12, 1935 in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, Thomas Hugh was a son of the late Carl and Ethel (Combs) Talley. He was raised and educated in Mt. Airy, and held fond memories of playing football for the Mt. Airy High School Bears. Hugh went on to earn his degree in Bio Chemistry at North Carolina State, where he was also involved with the ROTC.
On June 11, 1955, Hugh married Tommye J. Cox in Mt. Airy, and throughout the years, they held residence in Mt. Airy, Raleigh and Mooresville, North Carolina, as well as Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Hugh worked in the furniture industry, where he was widely recognized as an expert in the field, and was honored to be a candidate for the Furniture Hall of Fame. His employment entailed Reeves Brothers, Schnadig Corporation and Berkline Corporation, from where he retired after many years of service.
Hugh was a member Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Morristown and the Elks Club. His interests included photography, theology, football, flowers, birds, classical and jazz music, traveling, books and teaching Bible study. Hugh never met a stranger, and will be remembered for his gift to remember names, even after many years past. He loved nothing else, than to be surrounded by his family.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Tommye; five children: Susan (Jeff) Forsburg of Raleigh, NC, Tanya (Carl) Schmidt of Naperville, IL, Tommye "Dede" (Tim) Clevenger of Morristown, TN, Karla (Scott) Kuriger of Coal City, IL and Cheryl (Albert) Wang of Westchester, OH; three grandchildren: Teresa (Brian) Holger and Tracy (Tim) Koller both of Cincinnati, OH and Blake Yerkes of Fairborn, OH; one great grandchild Bryant Holger, and two brothers: James (Betty Jean) Talley of King, NC and Steve (Dianne) Talley of Mt. Airy, NC.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial celebration of Hugh's life will be held at The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2435 West Andrew Johnson Highway in Morristown, Tennessee on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. A Memorial reception will follow the services in the church fellowship hall. Pastor Leslie Wilder will officiate.
Preferred memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Morristown or to a charity of the donor's choosing.
Hugh will be inurned at a later date in Hamblen Memory Gardens in Morristown, Tennessee.
