Howard L. DeGrush
Age 100 of Coal City passed away Thursday evening, June 18, 2015 at his home.
Born June 7, 1915 in Mazon, Howard was a son of Forest and Luella (Steinberger-Scholfield) DeGrush. He was raised and educated in Mazon, and was a graduate of Mazon High School. On January 14, 1942, Howard married Adeline Thompson in Morris, and would go on to serve in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked 35 years with Peabody Coal as a Dock Supervisor, and was a competitor in the Senior Olympics. Howard enjoyed bowling, and was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to fish and hunt, and was known for beekeeping and having a strawberry stand with the berries he grew at home.
Survivors include his brother: Eugene DeGrush of Diamond; special niece and caregivers: Cindy (Billy) Klein of Coal City, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; wife Adeline; brothers and sisters: Vernon (Dorothy) DeGrush, Burnette (Louise) DeGrush, Lyle and Wayne DeGrush, Kenneth (Lucille) DeGrush, Gladys (Warren) Trotter, Evelyn (Ralph) Brooks, Ampheon (Mabel) DeGrush and Eleanor (John) Phillips; and sister-in-law: Margaret DeGrush.
A visitation will be on Friday June 26, 2015 from 9:00 AM until the time of funeral service at 11:00 AM at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block north of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow the service in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
Preferred memorials may be made in Howard’s memory as gifts to Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice.
