Gerald C. Van Duyne
"Jerry"
Age 79 of Wilmington, passed away Thursday July 15, 2011 at Heritage Manor in Dwight, after a two year battle with ALS-Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Born June 21, 1932 in Wilmington, Jerry was a son of the late Peter and Gertrude Glass-Van Duyne. He was raised and educated in Wilmington and following high school, proudly served in the United States Navy. Upon Jerry's honorable discharge he then worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet before attending Barbers College in Chicago. Jerry owned and operated Jerry's Barber Shop in Wilmington for 36 years until his retirement. He was a member of Saint Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington and the Miner's Club. Jerry enjoyed golfing and could often be found fishing the Miner's Club, as well as the river's. He had a variety of interests and can be most remembered for always living life to the fullest.
Survivors include his two sons: Gerald C. "Skeeter" Van Duyne, Jr. (Debbie Jo) of Paris, Missouri and Jeffrey J. Van Duyne (Sheila) of Wilmington; five grandchildren: Casey, Cory, Brett, Tyler and Kyle; one sister: Bernice (the late Don) Alcorn of Wilmington; two brothers: Dennis (Shirley) Van Duyne of Coal Valley, Illinois and Herman (Martina) Van Duyne of Panama and three sisters-in-law: Geraldine Van Duyne, Margaret Van Duyne and Joan Van Duyne, all of Wilmington, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Thomas, Richard, Peter, John, Leo and Vincent and five sisters: Rita Hurley, Marie Wilson, Lorraine Kunis, Evelyn Fisher and Marcella Anderson.
Visitation and Video Tribute will be held on Sunday July 17, 2011 between the hours of 2:00PM and 6:00PM at Freitag-Reeves & Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road in Wilmington.
Funeral services will follow Monday July 18th at 10:00AM in Saint Rose Catholic Church, 624 South Kankakee Street in Wilmington, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Steve Bondi and Deacon Don Dyer officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Jerry's memory to Kuzma Care Cottage, 635 South Main Street, Wilmington, Illinois 60481.
