Gene Allen Vandervort
"Geno"
Age 74 of Carbon Hill, passed away Friday afternoon, December 28, 2012.
Born September 12, 1938 in Ottawa, Geno is a son of Gladys Zacciginni (nee Allen) of Marseilles and the late Earl "Red" Vandervort. He was raised and educated in Ottawa, and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. Geno worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet where he retired on July 1, 1998 after 36 years of service. He was a former professional bowler, who enjoyed golfing and vegetable gardening. Geno loved his four legged companion Butterball, and moreover cherished the time spent with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his mother: Gladys Zacciginni of Marseilles; four children: Jay (Lisa) Vandervort and Nikki Vandervort, both of Virginia, Mandy (Mike) Krone of Coal City, and Alex Vandervort of Carbon Hill; five grandchildren: Samantha, Sara and Caden Vandervort, Makenzi Hahn, and Mikey Krone; two sisters: Janet Youngling of Marseilles and Paula (Richard) Farrero of Carbon Hill; his former wife and friend: Cheryl Tvrz of Braceville, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Geno was preceded in death by his father: Earl "Red" Vandervort; step father: James Zacciginni; and one brother Conrad Vandervort.
Cremation rights have been accorded, and a private family memorial was held. Inurnment with full military honors will take place Monday May 20, 2013 at 11:30AM in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery welcome center by 11:15AM.
