Freida I. Geiss
Age 85 of Wilmington, passed away Sunday evening, July 10, 2016 at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.
Born January 9, 1931 in Jacksonville, Illinois, Freida was a daughter of the late Lennie and Mabel (Thady) Sorrells. She was raised and educated through grade school in Jacksonville and graduated from Wilmington with the Class of 1949. Freida was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wilmington and a charter member of the Island City Square Dancers. She will be remembered for her love of the Chicago Bulls and Cubs.
Survivors include four sons: David (Joanne) Geiss of Radford, Virginia, Doug “Al” Geiss of Coal City, Gary Geiss of Wilmington and Dean (Donna) Geiss of Braidwood; (9) grandchildren: Eli (Brandi) Geiss, Graham (Robin) Geiss, Joel (Kari) Geiss, Julie (Josh) Woods, Andrew Geiss, Justin (Stacy) Geiss, Ashlee Geiss, Tyler Geiss and Cory Geiss; (12) great grandchildren: Juliana, Isabelle, Evan, Emily, Dierks, Leah, Chesnee, Annamarie, Veronica, Conner, Abram and Edie; her friend and daughter-in-law Teri Geiss of Wilmington, and sisters-in-law: Jan Sorrells of Portland, Oregon, Margaret Geiss, Lois Geiss, Adela Geiss and Norma Geiss, all of Wilmington, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Freida was preceded in death by her parents; husband Orville on October 13, 2001, brother Harold Sorrells and brothers-in-law: LaVerne, Calvin, Ervin, Leon, Merle and Donald Geiss.
Visitation and video tribute will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 401 East Kahler Road in Wilmington on Thursday, July 14, 2016 between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow Friday morning in the church at 10:00 a.m. with Reverends Tom Kingery, H. Jae Lee and Mi-Sook Yoo officiating.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Wilmington, where Freida will be laid to rest with her late husband Orville. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Freida’s memory to the First United Methodist Church of Wilmington Building Fund or to the Wilmington Lion’s Club.
