Age 78 of Coal City, passed away Friday, April 10, 2015 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born May 23, 1936 in Morris, Elizabeth Lou was a daughter of the late William Edward and Velma (Albrecht) Smith.  She was raised and educated in Coal City, and graduated from Coal City High School.  On February 20, 1955, Bette married Kenneth Max Cullums in the Methodist Church in Gardner, and together they made their home in Coal City. Bette worked nine years as a teller for the First National Bank of Coal City, six years with Smith Hardware and  thirteen years at Hornsby’s. Bette was a member of the Coal City United Methodist Church and previously belonged to the Red Hat club. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and was a Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include her husband Max; two daughters: Barbara (Pat) Bunton and Cindy (Alan) Farcus both of Coal City; three grandchildren: Adam Richard (Allison Yasukawa) Farcus, Matthew Paul Farcus (fiancé Jenna Plese) and Benjamin Alan Farcus all of Coal City; three brothers: Jackie Smith of Wilmington, William Dale (Pat) Smith and David Jon (Linda) Smith of Coal City; two sisters: Velma Doty of Florida and Paula (Bob) Runty of Coal City and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bette was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law Carol Smith; niece Dawn Smith and nephew Bobby Runty.

Visitation and Video Tribute will be held on Monday, April 13, 2015 between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block north of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Bette will then lie in state on Tuesday morning April 14th at Coal City United Methodist Church, 6805 East McArdle Road in Coal City from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service 10:00 a.m. Reverend Walter Carlson will officiate and burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

Preferred memorials in lieu of flowers may be made as gifts in Bette’s memory to Coal City United Methodist Church building fund or to Joliet Area Community Hospice.
