Doris Nicol

Age 96 of Wilmington, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Miller Rehabilitation Center in Kankakee, Illinois.

Born July 16, 1928, in Morrisonville, Illinois, Doris Evelyn was the daughter of Alva Clyde and Helen Grace (Sloman) Lamb. She was raised in Morrisonville, where she graduated from Morrisonville High School with the Class of 1946. On June 14, 1947, Doris married the love of her life, John A. “Jack” Nicol, in Bloomington, Illinois. Their early years together took them to Bloomington while Jack attended college, and later to Chicago, California, and Baltimore during his military service. Following Jack’s honorable discharge, they returned to Morrisonville before settling in Wilmington in the mid-1950s, where they built a life and raised their family.

Doris began her career at State Farm Insurance in Bloomington before dedicating herself to her home and family. Later, she worked for Dr. Razma’s office in Wilmington during the summer months, assisting with record keeping. She ultimately retired from Wilmington High School after 26 years of service.

A woman of faith, Doris was an active member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington and was involved with the St. Rose School PTO when her children were young. She loved playing cards and cherished her Friday night card club. Bowling, bingo, and her involvement with the Will-Grundy Senior Citizens also brought her great joy. In later years, Wednesday nights became a cherished tradition of pizza and cards with family and friends, and she and Jack could often be found dining at the Chick-a-Dee, a favorite local spot.

Doris and Jack were inseparable throughout their 75 years of marriage, always by each other’s side. His passing on November 14, 2022, left a void, but her love for family remained steadfast. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and a cherished "Gi-Gi".

Survivors include: two daughters: Sandra (Mark) Mahalik and Barbara (Doug) Rink; five grandchildren: John Welsh, David (Kelli) Welsh, Kate Welsh, Calvin (Jessica) Rink, and Jordan (Adam) Granger; nine great grandchildren: Luke and Cole Welsh, Ryder, Myles, and Vylette Rink, Jett and Brynlee Granger and Nolan and Eli Stevens; and many nieces and nephews.
