Donald J. Frey

Age 89, of Coal City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Lightways Hospice Home in Joliet, Illinois.

Born on February 8, 1936, in Newport, Michigan, Don was a twin son of Clifford and Pearl (Nadeau) Frey. He was raised in Newport and attended Monroe Catholic Central High School.

In the early 1980s, Don made Coal City his home, where he became a beloved fixture in the community. In 1987, he purchased P.J.’s Tavern, transforming it into Don’s Beer Store, which he proudly owned and operated for nearly the past four decades. His business was more than just a place to grab a drink—it was a gathering spot where friendships were formed, laughter was shared, and memories were made.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Don enjoyed playing softball in his younger years and found joy in canoeing and fishing. One of his happiest places was at the corner of his bar, surrounded by good company, watching multiple games at once, and enjoying a cold beer. Don’s generous spirit and kind heart defined him—he never hesitated to lend a hand to someone in need. His warmth, integrity, and unwavering support of his community earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.

Don will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his years.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Beverly; three children: Don, Mike and Cheryl; grandchildren: Tyler, Trent, Jake, Luke and Nick and two great grandchildren: Olivia and Otto. In addition, Don is survived by Bev’s family; children: Peggy, Randy and Bill, and grandchildren: Shain, Brittany, Jasmin, Nolan, Darcy, Dillon, Collin and Josh.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Ray, and four sisters: Marion, Leona, Marie and Bernice.

Per Don’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded, and a celebration of his life will be held in the bar at a date to be announced.
