Derek Hogg

Age 34 of Channahon and formerly of Shorewood, left this world peacefully on Friday morning, December 15, 2017 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, following a valiant fight with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

Born February 23, 1983 in Joliet, Derek is a son of Marion (Wadkins) Oddo of Shorewood and Stephen Hogg of Woodridge. Growing up, Derek was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and an honor student at Troy as well as at Joliet West. He played soccer from 5th grade through high school, and he was proud to have played in the 3 on 3 national tournament in 2001, the same year he graduated from Joliet West High School.

Derek went on to attend Joliet Junior College, followed by Chief Shabbona Fire Training Academy, and later St. Mary’s Hospital Emergency Medical Services – Paramedic Program in Kankakee. He was at Troy Protection District while in the academy, and later worked for the Kankakee City Fire Department and the Wilmington Fire Protection District.

On March 5, 2011, Derek married Holly Kilgore, and together they made their home and brought three beautiful children into the world. He was a member of Channahon United Methodist Church.

Derek enjoyed the outdoors, kayaking and riding his motorcycle. He was a guy who loved music and knew how to dance and “rap”. Halloween was always a special holiday for Derek and Holly, and that was seconded by Christmas. Derek was a big kid at heart, and his children were always #1, as well as his love for his nieces and nephews.

In the Spring of 2013, Derek was diagnosed with ALS, which led to his passion for awareness of the disease. He was a staple at the Les Turner Strike Out ALS 5k and Walk Run and Roll annually through 2017. Derek also provided great inspiration to the ALS community.

Derek’s family is most appreciative and forever grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support during this most difficult journey. They extend a special thank you to the Les Turner Foundation, Channahon United Methodist Church, and the local communities at hand.

Derek will always be loved and never forgotten in the eyes of his children.

Survivors include his loving wife Holly; three children: Paxton, Hayden and Brinlee; his parents: Marion (Mike) Oddo and Stephen (Pam) Hogg; sister, Stephanie (Jason) Meister of Elwood; maternal grandmother, Charlotte Wadkins of Shorewood; three uncles: Gary Hogg of New York, David Hogg of Oregon and James Hogg of Indiana; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Christina (Michael) Strysik of Oswego, James (Tina) Kilgore of Minooka and Kyle Kilgore of Plainfield; nieces and nephews: Autumn, Brett and Ashley Strysik and Madelyn and Caleb Kilgore; his mother-in-law and father-in-law: Mary Conley of Joliet and James (Dee) Kilgore of Plainfield, and numerous brothers and sisters in fire service, as well as countless friends.
