Age 85 of Coal City, passed away Thursday February 6, 2014 at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Born March 1, 1928 in Coal City, Bernie was the son of the late Bernard Joseph, Sr. and Margaret A. Bruno-Giordano. He was raised and educated in Coal City, graduated from Coal City High School with the Class of 1946, and went on to attend Joliet Junior College. Bernie married Doris M. Dennison on August 25, 1951 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Braidwood, and together they made their home in Coal City. Bernie was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, and belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Braidwood Council. He was a past Coal City Police Commissioner, and served the community for 34 years. Bernie retired from the Folger Adam Company in Lemont. In his spare time, Bernie enjoyed fishing, was an avid reader, and will be remembered as a regular patron of the Coal City Library. Bernie took pleasure in following all of the local Coal City sports, and also enjoyed watching Notre Dame football.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; one daughter Kathy (Tim) Gabehart and four grandchildren: Michael, Brian, Kevin (fiancAC. Kylie Knop) and Kyle Gabehart, all of Coal City; one great granddaughter Bailey; his brother Marvin (Margaret) Giordano of Wilmington; one brother-in-law Ray (Patricia) Dennison of Morton, Illinois, and two sisters-in-law: Joyce (Thomas) Perkins of Gardner and Lois (James) Watters of Coal City, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law Mary Ellen McDermott.

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Sunday February 9, 2014 between the hours of 2:00PM and 6:00PM at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block North of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Funeral Services will follow Monday morning, February 10th, at 10:30AM in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 South Kankakee Street in Coal City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Robert Noesen officiating and burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Michael Gabehart, Brian Gabehart, Kevin Gabehart, Kyle Gabehart, Thomas Perkins and Ray Dennison. Honorary pallbearers will be: Marvin Giordano, Louis Bruno, Jack Bates and James Watters.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Bernie's name to the Assumption Building Fund, in the form of masses, or to a charity of the donor's choosing.
