Audrey June (Thompson) Thornburg

Age 85, of Coal City, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Morris Hospital.

Born June 3, 1924 in Madison, Wisconsin, Audrey was the daughter of Russell and Geneva Thompson. She was raised and educated in the Madison and Reedsburg, Wisconsin area, and later graduated from Joliet Junior College with the class of 1975. Audrey was a Veteran of the United States Navy, having served during World War II and stationed at Mare Island Naval Hospital, San Francisco, California. Audrey worked at the Badger Ordinance Works in Baraboo, Wisconsin and the Retail Credit Company in Joliet, Illinois. On October 6, 1946, Audrey married Robert Thornburg, a decorated World War II Navy Veteran, in Joliet. Audrey was a member of the Cantigny Post 367 V.F.W., Disabled American Veterans, and Universalist Unitarian Church, Joliet. Audrey truly enjoyed her family, watching tennis, playing card & board games, the Chicago Cubs, and her dear pets.

Survivors include one daughter: Linda (Edward) Wendler, Sr. of Coal City; two grand-children: Edward Wendler, Jr. of Coal City and Autumn (Mark) Picchi of New Lenox; dear great-grandson: Ethan Wendler of Coal City; niece: Judith (Thomas) Ryan of Joliet; great-niece: Kelly Ryan of Joliet; and numerous cousins and friends, including special long-time friend Lorayne Goodspeed.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert in January 1979; and her step-sister: Mary Capadona.

Visitation and video tribute celebrating Audrey's full life will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 4 p.m. until time of memorial tribute at 7 p.m., concluding at 8 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block North of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City.

Audrey's wishes to donate her remains as an Anatomical Gift for Scientific Research has been granted and she will be laid to rest with her husband at Woodlawn Memorial cemetery, Joliet, Illinois at a later date.
