"Maurie"
Age 75 of Mazon, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning January 25, 2014.
Born August 30, 1938 in Morris, Maurie was a son of the late Arvid, Sr. and Fern Skoien-Johnson. He was a 1957 graduate of Morris High School, and early on worked for the family business, which was Nelson's Florist in Morris. He later gained employment with the Morris Paper Mill and on September 5, 1959, Maurie married Dolores Eleanor Misener in Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Seneca. It was in 1960, that Maurie went to work for Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet, where he served as an EMT and retired as a machinist in 1999. During that time he also worked at the Mazon Grain Elevator and served as an EMT and Fireman with Mazon Fire Department and MVK Ambulance. After retirement, Maurie went to work at Wal-Mart in Morris, first as a night maintenance employee, and later moved into a greeter position, which he retired from in 2010. Maurie was a member Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Kinsman and IAMAW Local Lodge #851 out of Channahon. He enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre and canasta, and was a great sports fan who followed the Chicago Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks, Jeff Gordon and NASCAR as a whole. Maurie had many memorable trips to the Covered Bridge Festival in Rockville, Indiana and aside from reading, like to arrange flowers. He cherished his family and took pride in spending time with his grandkids.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years Dolores; eight children: Christine Manning of Bourbonnais, Kathleen Borchelt of Morris, Colleen (Scott) Blair of Ransom, Tim (Jane) Johnson of Kempton, Scott Johnson of Mazon, Carrie (Michael) Coughlin of Mazon, Allison (Joe) Fiedler of Ransom and Andrew Johnson of Mazon; (15) grandchildren: Jacob (Samantha) Manning of Kansas City, Missouri, John Borchelt and Steven Borchelt of Morris, Abbie Blair, Katlin Blair and Maggie Blair of Ransom, Michael Johnson of Dwight, Emily Johnson of Kempton, Chase Johnson of New Lenox, Taelor Coughlin, Terah Coughlin and Michaela Coughlin of Mazon and Drake Fiedler, Colten Fiedler and Madison Fielder of Ransom; two great grandchildren: Patrick and Teresa Manning; three brothers and one sister: Russell Johnson of Wilmington, Pamela Floyd of Joliet, Wendell (Sharon) Johnson of Morris and Richard (Tina) Johnson of Morris; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Arthur (Mary Lou) Misener of Aurora, Joseph (Pat) Misener of Morris and Kevin (Cora) Misener of Marseilles and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Maurie was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law: Gerald and Evelyn Misener; brother-in-law Howard Misener and sister-in-law Mary (Ken) Qually.
Visitation and video tribute will be held on Tuesday January 28, 2014 between the hours of 4:00PM and 8:00PM at Reeves Funeral Home, 408 East Washington Street (one block East of Illinois Route 47) in Morris. Funeral services will follow Wednesday morning January 29th at 10:00AM in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 600 East Jackson Street in Morris. Reverend John Hornicak from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Kinsman will officiate.
Burial will be in Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Morris and pallbearers will be Maurie's grandsons: Jacob Manning, John Borchelt, Steven Borchelt, Michael Johnson, Chase Johnson, Drake Fiedler and Colten Fiedler.
Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Maurie's memory to the Mazon Fire Department, MVK Ambulance or to a charity of the donor's choosing.
