Alice Mulcahy, 95, a 62-year resident of Morris, Illinois passed away peacefully Thursday January 25, 2024 at her home, with her children at her side.
Alice was born on December 12, 1928, to the late Michael and Kathryn Mooney, in Dwight, Illinois. She was a graduate of Dwight High School and attended the College of St. Francis. On November 20, 1948, Alice married James Mulcahy and they resided in Streator. She and Jim and were happily married for 69 years before his passing in 2018.
Alice worked a wide variety of jobs during her lifetime. She was a lab technician at St. Mary’s Hospital in Streator and a radiation lab tech for ammunition workers at the Joliet Arsenal. Alice also worked as a proofreader for the Streator Times Press until 1960, when Alice and Jim adopted their son Michael. Alice and Jim moved to Morris in 1962 after welcoming their daughter Sharon.
Alice and her husband Jim opened Morris Automotive Supply, a NAPA Automotive parts supplier, in 1962. They opened a second store, in 1976, in Minooka. Alice was the book keeper, accountant, payroll supervisor and human resource manager for the stores. When Alice’s children were both in school, she began teaching kindergarten at the Lutheran School in Morris. After three years of teaching she was asked to fill in as an administrative assistant at the new Grundy County Vocational School. This position led to a variety of substitute office positions at Center School, Garfield Grade, and Shabbona Middle School.
Alice was always busy! Sheloved to travel, play cards, golf, and spend time being "Meema" to her two grandsons. After her husband Jim passed in 2018, Alice became a voracious bridge player and participated in numerous women’s card clubs. Alice enjoyed the game of golf so much that many of her vacations included golf outings. She was a member of the Morris Country Club for five decades and participated in the ladies golf league.
A devout Catholic, Alice was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church for 62 years. Alice was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed baking and cooking for members of the parish. Alice, with her husband Jim, were members of the Eagles, Kiwanis, VFW, American Legion, Lions Club, Knights of Columbus. and the Moose Club during their time in Morris. Alice and Jim also established a scholarship fund at Joliet Junior College, in the Automotive Technology Department.
Alice is survived by her son Michael, daughter Sharon (Joe) Zicherman, grandchildren-Matthew (Lia) Mulcahy and Jacob Zicherman. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sisters, Mary Mooney and Kathryn Lindner.
Many thanks to her dear friend Linda Anderson, the staff at the Morris Hospital Infusion Lab, the wonderful nurses and aides at Quality Home Care of Morris, and the caregivers from Vitas Hospice of LaSalle/Peru. Their tireless efforts and care allowed Alice to remain at home these past few years.
Additionally, Alice's family would like to thank those individuals that have reached out with remembrances, during the past few weeks, with stories of how Alice touched their lives in such a positive way.
