Alfred N. Mushro of Waukee, Iowa was born and raised in Coal City, Illinois to immigrant parents, Joseph and Alvea (Hazer) Mushro. He was the youngest and sole survivor of six brothers and sisters.

After finishing high school, he enlisted in World War II as an Army Sergeant and communications director. After his service in third world countries, he returned home to operate his family clothing business.

Throughout his business career, he chartered The Lion’s Club in his home town, as well as chartering the new building of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Joliet, Illinois. He was a major contributor to St. Joseph’s Hospital as well as Catholic schools in Coal City, Joliet, and Aurora, Illinois. He was well known for his charitable assistance to families in distress.

He enjoyed politics and successfully helped support many political candidates in Grundy, Will, and La Salle counties. He also enjoyed time with his family and sharing memories of his travels and war time experiences in third world countries. He spent his retirement with family in Minnesota and finally, Des Moines, Iowa where he passed away on November 16, 2016.

Alfred is survived by daughter, Mary Joann Mushro of Waukee, IA son, Robert (Phyllis) Mushro of Clive, IA and daughter, Jolene (Mitchell) Stanton of Grayslake, IL; granddaughters, Erin (Brent) Baedke, Jenna Mushro and Elizabeth Stanton; as well as many nieces, nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings and his wife, Elizabeth Nahas Mushro.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the Cemetery Welcome Center at 9:45 a.m. Reverend Robert Noesen, pastor of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Coal City will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Hospice Department at the VA Medical Center, 3600 - 30th Street, Des Moines, IA 50310.
