Alan L. Niehl Alan L. Niehl , age 85, World War II veteran passed away at Joliet Area Community Hospice, on Jan. 8,2010. He was born on Sept. 24, 1924 in Beecher City, Il., the son of John and a Ethel Niehls. During his life he was a farmer, plasterer, Joliet Arsenal employee, and retired from Stepan Company after 33 years. He enjoyed the Bears, Cubs and being outside cutting grass. He married Lillian Agusta Otta on Dec. 3, 1943. He is survived by his wife and two children; Janet King and Barbara (Ray) Enix of Elwood, three grandchildren; Sandy(Tom) Daniell of Las Vegas, NV, Paul (Launa) Enix of Lake Charles, LA, and Ranae (Marty) Loghry of Plainfield, Il, and eleven great grandchildren; Liberdy, Gerald Alan, Kyle, and Blake Daniell, Jay, Molly, Tyler, and Sara Enix, Jessica Gorden, and Megan and Kelly Loghry, brother; John Mark(Doris) Niehls PA, and several nieces and nephews. He was a WW ll Army Air Force veteran serving in the Northern France /Normandy Offensive Air Europe/Southern France Theater. He completed 36 successful missions. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct Metal, the Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters for successful missions over enemy territory and the Distinguished Flying Cross for kicking out a lodged bomb in the bomb bay area. He was a gunner on the Liberator bomber. Visitation for Alan Niehl is Thursday, January 14,2010 from 4:00- 7:OO pm at Freitag Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Friday, January 15,2010 at 10:00 am and interment at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Memorials to Joliet Area Community Hospice would be appreciated.
