“Skip”

Age 92 of Wilmington, passed away Tuesday morning, February 23, 2016 at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.

Born April 11, 1923 in South Bend, Nebraska, Vernon Francis was a son of the late Herman and Clara (Detsauer) Scheel. He was raised and educated in Nebraska and went on to honorably serve in the United States Army. On May 3, 1954, Skip married Alice Henkelman in Fremont, Nebraska and together they relocated to Wilmington in 1956. Skip worked for the US Government in both Nebraska, as well as at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, and later retired from the Wilmington School District.

Survivors include his wife Alice; eight children: Shane (Madonna) Scheel, Shawn Scheel, Sherl Randles, Scott (Kay) Scheel and Sonja Castillo, all of Wilmington, Sally Scheel of Minooka and Stacy (Adam Egizio) Scheel  and Sloan (Jennifer) Scheel, both of Wilmington; grandchildren: Stephanie (Scott) Cherney, Amy Castillo, Emily Castillo, Dallas Castillo, Kelly Castillo, Leya (John) Mitchell, Cort (fiancé Kayla) Scheel, Madison Scheel and Ava Scheel; great grandchildren: Chloe, Nicholas and Anthony Wells, David Castillo and Ian Mitchell and two sisters-in-law: Betty Schiltz and Rita Cruse, both of Nebraska.

Skip was preceded in death by his parents; two sons-in-law: Jason Randles and David Castillo; one great-grandson Noah; four sisters: Lulu, Myrt, June, and Goldie and four brothers: Emil, Walter, Merle and Carl.

Per Skips wishes, his remains have been donated for anatomical study, and private family services will be held.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Skip’s memory to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
